Study suggests organic foods linked to lower cancer risk

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) – A recent study suggests people who primarily eat organic foods are 25 percent less likely to develop cancer.

The study was released in JAMA this week.

Dr. Thomas Campbell, who serves as Medical Director of the Weight Management and Lifestyle Program at Highland Hospital in Rochester, said the study results were interesting, as it also found that people who eat more organic food are generally eating and living a healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Campbell said it is possible that some of the organic food effect could potentially be related to the healthy lifestyle effect.

“I worry a little bit that people have to eat organic to eat healthy,” Dr. Campbell said. “The first step that people need to keep in mind is just choose healthier foods.”

Dr. Campbell added that the biggest target on people’s minds should be trying to choose more fruits and vegetables and whole grains, while choosing fewer added sugars, fats and processed foods.
