You’re on track for big savings.
One way to possibly save this summer? Travel with your family or a group on Amtrak. The train line announced its “Share Fares” sale on Wednesday, which allows big savings for groups of three or four.
Here’s how it works: The “Share Fares” offer is available for up to four people traveling together on the same itinerary (so one person should book the group); you book on Amtrak.com with the promo code V291. While the first ticket costs full price, the second one is 15% off, the third one is 60% off and the fourth is 70% off.
Share Fares are valid for coach seats on the Amtrak Northeast Regional from Washington, D.C., to Boston, and on the national network on trains like the California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, City of New Orleans, Cardinal, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Texas Eagle, Coast Starlight, Lake Shore Limited, Palmetto, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, and Crescent.
The ongoing sale is valid for travel starting April 27, but you have to book three days in advance to get the “Share Fares” deal. The sale is not available on the Acela Express and Auto Train.
Of course, it’s important to remember that traveling by train often takes longer than a flight — and it’s not always cheaper. Especially not if you can snap up some of the uber-low fares that Southwest Airlines is now offering. These include $49 one-way flights to places like San Jose and Long Beach, Calif., as well as a number of under-$100 fares.
While this sale ends April 25, you’ll probably see more super low fares like these as discount airlines compete for your business. Sign up for airline’s email lists and follow them on social media to get notified of sales when they launch.
