Seventy outstanding writers, poets, and playwrights from a number of continents have signed a letter endorsing Sally Rooney’s boycott of Israel describing it as “an exemplary response to the mounting injustices inflicted on Palestinians”.
Main authors together with award-winning Irish authors Niamh Campbell and Kevin Barry; Rachel Kushner, Eileen Myles and Eliot Weinburger from the US; Monica Ali, Caryl Churchill, Pankaj Mishra, China Miéville, and Kamila Shamsie from the UK, are amongst the signatories to the letter.
“Sally Rooney’s refusal to signal a contract with a mainstream Israeli writer — which markets the work of the Israeli Ministry of Defence — is, subsequently, an exemplary response to the mounting injustices inflicted on Palestinians,” stated the letter, which went on to spotlight the decision by Palestinian artists to their worldwide colleagues “to finish complicity in Israel’s violations of their human rights.”
