Deborah Willis Awarded $200,000 Prize by way of Crystal Bridges Museum


New York-based photographer, curator, and historian Deborah Willis has been introduced because the recipient of the $200,000 Don Tyson Prize for the Development of American Artwork. The prize is awarded biannually by way of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Artwork in Bentonville, Arkansas. Willis, who is understood for her paintings investigating the historical past of Black pictures within the context of gender, is the primary historian to obtain the glory.

A professor and chair of the dept of pictures and imaging at New York College’s Tisch College of the Arts, Willis is the creator of the pathbreaking 2009 quantity Posing Good looks: African American Photographs from the Eighteen Nineties to the Provide (2009), which assembles 200 photographs of notable Black topics to inspect their impact at the fashionable perceptions and expectancies surrounding Black good looks.
