In her first primary exhibition out of doors of the U.S., artist Amy Sherald (in the past) items a frame of labor that’s distinctly American. The Global We Make, which is now on view, brings Sherald’s signature grisaille portraiture to Hauser & Wirth London. Huge in scale and essentially rendered on flat, monochromatic backdrops, the oil artwork reference a way of made up our minds optimism to form fact. “The works mirror a want to file lifestyles as I see it and as I think it. Questions of masculinity and American id pervade the display, in particular in works like “A God Blessed Land (Empire of Dust),” which positions an overall-clad farmer atop a John Deere tractor. This agricultural apparatus echoes the topics of freedom and motion in Sherald’s “Deliverance” diptych that includes two figures balancing on their dust motorcycles as they perilously bounce mid-air. “The tractor and motorcycle artwork discover other expressions of self-sovereignty in our communities and the way those expressions may lift into the long run.
